Mary Dow Center Expands to Serve Blue Hill and Deer Isle Peninsula Communities

4/23/2018

Cancer has touched many families throughout Hancock County. As the need for highly specialized cancer care continues to grow, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital has formed a partnership with the Mary Dow Center at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. This new relationship will provide leading edge oncology services for Hancock County and beyond. Philip Brooks, MD, an oncologist and hematologist with EMMC Cancer Care will see patients twice a week at the Mary Dow Center.

“This is exciting news,” says Mike Murnik, MD, senior physician executive at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. “The Mary Dow Center is a warm, nurturing environment in which to receive care, and Dr. Brooks will be able to focus his time in one location to better serve more people in Hancock County.”  Caring for patients with cancer includes understanding very specialized medications, complex side-effects, as well as managing highly complicated and expensive insurance claims. “It just makes sense to consolidate our resources in a dedicated center where everyone from the scheduling staff to the pharmacy technicians to the coders, billers, and nursing staff is specifically trained in cancer care.”

“With oncology services consolidated at the Mary Dow Center, Blue Hill area patients will have more choice in which days they are able to visit with the oncologist and have all services provided on that day,” explains John Ronan, president of both Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. “In the past, when orders where written for chemotherapy, patients would return home and have to come back the next day to receive their chemo that had been prepared overnight in Brewer and transported to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.”

Specialized, compassionate care at the Mary Dow Center allows both Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital to concentrate their expertise in one place.  Stephanie DeRedin, RN Director of the Mary Dow Center announces “we anticipate bringing more adult oncology services from Eastern Maine Medical Center to our patients and families in Hancock County and look forward to leveraging expertise from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston due to the collaboration with EMMC Cancer Care in Brewer.” Stephanie also reminds patients who may be concerned about transportation challenges that, “both hospitals are well-connected with several local community agencies that help provide transportation solutions – and we would be glad to help those concerned about this change.”
